Wolverhampton Society of Artists Biennial Exhibition 2009

This month, Wolverhampton Society of Artists return to the Art Gallery with their ever popular biennial exhibition, displaying a diverse range of styles, mediums and subject. This exhibition opened on 12 September, and as usual, is accompanied by a series of interesting events, and the opportunity to purchase works for sale in the exhibition.

Wolverhampton Society of Artists grew out of the Wolverhampton Sketch Club, founded in 1884 and associated with the city’s art school. This group of gifted amateurs and professional artists held their first exhibition that year at Wolverhampton Art Gallery, with whom close links have been maintained to this day.

In 1919 the Wolverhampton Art Circle evolved and in 1938, the name was changed to Wolverhampton Society of Artists. It was actively supported by well-known local families and among its members were several eminent artists including Edwin Butler Bayliss, Percy Shakespeare, Robert Emerson and Sir Charles Wheeler.

Head of Curatorial Services Marguerite Nugent said:
‘It is wonderful to welcome the Society of Artists back to Wolverhampton Art Gallery, for us to showcase the best work produced by the local artists in the society.

The group has such strong historical links Wolverhampton’s past, but the work they have produced for this exhibition is fresh, relevant and displayed in a modern way.’

For those inspired by the exhibition, there will also be the opportunity for budding artists to see demonstrations of the artists at work and even try their own hand at the skills they see.
